OVERVIEW:

THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA: THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

As China and the United States emerge from the global financial crisis, both countries face unprecedented challenges to their domestic economies. In response, both are embarking on major domestic economic restructuring programs that are likely to have substantial ripple effects on the bilateral relationship and the global economy. Each country has legitimate interests in the success of the other country’s domestic economic outcomes, as the changes sought by each arguably serve the interests of the other.

On May 19th, Caixin Media and the John L. Thornton Center at the Brookings Institution are hosting a full-day conference, Caixin Summit Washington D.C. Session. The theme of the conference is The United States and China: The Next Five Years, and the conference will examine the U.S. and Chinese economies in order to better understand the substance and prospects for economic restructuring in each country over the coming five years. Conference speakers will also analyze the likely impact of these programs on the bilateral relationship.
